The British royal family recently shared the news that Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle , the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were expecting the second royal child, but shortly after the news broke on the world the two sat down with Oprah Winfrey March 7 for an interview that focused on the biggest concerns in their lives. The 2-hr long special aired, putting the couple’s future with the royal family in
jeopardy, and viewers are still going to social media outlets to see the talking points of the interview.
Over the course of the interview, Oprah asked questions on Markle getting adjust to life in royalty, becoming a mother, marriage, and more.
In the interview one of the hot topics that Markle discussed was a member of the royal family’s “concern” regarding the skin color of her and Prince Harry’s first-born child, Archie. During her time in the palace the Duchess mentioned that there was at least one person who expressed some sort of “concern” about the color of her son’s skin.
In the interview, Markle also mentioned that “there were also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he was born” but when asked “who is having that conversation?” Markle responded: “that was relayed to me from Harry from conversations that family had with him.”
Of course, Oprah wanted answers. When Prince Harry joined in on the conversation, despite that the question being asked, again, for him to disclose who expressed such a “concern,” he refused.
Later in interview, Markle expressed her battle with mental health and suicidal thoughts. Markle told Oprah that she “didn’t want to be alive anymore” and “thought it would solve everything for everyone.”
As a result, the Duchess chose to seek help through the human resources department of the palace, but was denied sufficient aid because she was not an employee.
With the Duchess shedding light on a dark moment in her life, there were also the moments she shared with Oprah that sparked her fire again, including her and Prince Harry expecting royal baby number 2! With baby Archie getting a new sister, the couple confirms that they will not have any more children, and their new baby girl will be eighth in line for the throne right after Archie, although the family’s future with the royal family is unclear.
According to Good Morning America, Queen Elizabeth II released a statement following the interview, stating: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” which some royal-watchers noted the lack of use of the couple’s royal titles in the statement.
Prince Harry and Markle also talked about the financial status in the interview. Though Prince Harry sits on a financial cushion worth millions, the royal family “literally cut [him] off.” Prince Harry discussed that without his inheritance moving his family to California would not have been possible. With the loss of funding from the royal family, the Prince and the Duchess also lost the security of royal protection once the couple moved to Canada.
Near the closing of the interview, Markle tackled yet another heated topic that hit social media almost immediately. Who made who cry?
At her royal wedding, the apparent running rumor was that Markle made Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton, cry on account of the flower girl’s dress. Markle cleared the air and mention that “she made [her] cry” and saw this incident as a “turning point” as far as her involvement with the royal family.
As the interview ended, Markle brings up the fact that her and Prince Harry had a private marriage ceremony three days before their live ceremony. Apparently, “no on [knew] about that,” according to Markle, “we called the Archbishop and we said ‘Look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us.'”
