TikTok video goes viral after Amazon employees demand pay increases and walk out during ‘Prime Day.’
Employees of e-commerce company Amazon in Doraville, Georgia, walked out on July 13, 2022, protesting the long work hours and low pay.
The employees at this location have asked for a three-dollar increase from the wages at the time of the walkout but have been since denied the pay bump, according to one Amazon employee and TikToker @nikkithecreative.
Workers at the Doraville Amazon location earn between $15 to 16 dollars an hour, four to five days a week. On average, employees work up to eleven hours a day in unsafe conditions at the location.
Workers chose to walk out during the busy week leading up to ‘Prime Day,’ when the popular site saw an increase in sales among its Prime members.
“(The) first Amazon walk out in the south,” one of the workers says in the video.
In the 1:24 video, there were about thirty participants in the walkout.
Among those in attendance were members of Workers United. Workers United is a labor union representing workers in various fields like distribution and food service.
@nikkithecreative says that the demand for an increase was due to the rough nature of the job and making enough money to afford essentials.
“It makes me sad to know that my coworkers are working so hard…and it’s still not enough to pay for our basic necessities,” she says in the video.
In response to the walkout, an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement, “...we’re always listening and always looking at ways to improve, we remain proud of the pay, benefits and working conditions we already provide our teams in Doraville.”
